After an alleged armed robbery of a Marathon Gas Station on Hwy. 278 in Newton County, the Covington Police Department quickly responded to a “be on the lookout” (BOLO) and arrested the suspect Monday.

NCSO sergeant Cortney Morrison said dispatch received a call on a possible robbery around 9 a.m. The witness told authorities that a black male wearing all black with a black bandana over his face was feeing the convenience store at 12805 Hwy. 278 in a dark green, possibly black Honda Accord.

According to Morrison, the male came into the store “brandishing a handgun and demanded cash.” Once the clerk handed the man the cash, he took off running and was seen getting into the Honda, Morrison said.

The BOLO then went out and, Morrison said, before NCSO deputies could get to the scene, Covington Police officers saw a vehicle matching the description of dark green/black Honda Accord at a traffic light in the westbound lane of Hwy. 278.
According to reports, the vehicle also matched a description of having a white piece of paper partially covering the tag, with a black male driver, dressed in black.

The Honda Accord was pulled over in the parking lot of 3165 Elm Street, and Cortez Dallas, 22 of Jericho Drive in Covington was asked to step out of the vehicle.

According to reports, CPD officers asked Dallas if he had a weapon on him, to which he replied “no.” Dallas was then asked by an officer if he had weapons in the vehicle, to which Dallas reportedly responded “yes, in the glove box.”

The weapon was confiscated by CPD, along with an large, undisclosed amount of cash from the driver’s pockets.

Dallas was arrested and charged with armed robbery.
