Last year’s event began after a moment of silence in honor of Boston and the Boston Marathon bombing victims. Eric John was the overall winner in the 10K in a time of 38 minutes, 22 seconds, and Kelly Brown was the female winner in 45:03. The proceeds for the event went toward children and families who want to participate in YMCA events.

The Covington YMCA is preparing for the 13th Annual Covington Cheerios Challenge on Saturday, April 19, which will include a 10K/ 5K Road Race, 1-mile Fun Run/Walk and new this year, a Tot Trot for children 5 and under.

The event will be held at the YMCA on Newton Drive, with the 10K beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Trix Tot Trot at 8:45 a.m., the 1-mile fun run/walk at 9:00 a.m., and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

This Covington Cheerios Challenge is a USATF Certified – AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifier.  This is the 13th year that the YMCA has worked in partnership with General Mills and other local businesses to create this community event.

“Participation in this event continues to grow tremendously each year and we have come a long way in these 13 years” Kacie Brown, YMCA Membership Director said. “It is an exciting day for the YMCA and for our community.  In 2013 we had a record setting turn out of runners and walkers and are expecting even more participants in 2014!  We appreciate the hard work of our 116 volunteers who come out to make this event possible.  The excitement and support around the Covington Cheerios Challenge is contagious.

“We are thrilled to announce that the Cheerios No. 31 Race Car will be back at our event again this year and we will also be having a Silent Auction in conjunction with our event.”

The Silent Auction will begin during packet pickup on April 18 at 10 a.m. and continue until the start of the 5K on Saturday, April 19.

The Cheerios Challenge is a part of the YMCA’s annual Healthy Kid’s Day Celebration. All proceeds from this event will go toward the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign which offers financial assistance to families in our community who otherwise could not participate in Y programs.

For more information call the YMCA at 770-787-3908 or visit the Y’s website at cvy.ymcaalanta.org.  Registration forms for the races can be downloaded from this website.  Online registration is available at active.com.
