Covington resident reelected to state party leadership role

ATLANTA — A Covington resident will remain in a leadership role with the state Democratic Party for the next four years.

Sarah Todd won a third term as the vice chairperson of Congressional District Chairs and County Committees during the Democratic Party of Georgia’s first State Committee meeting of 2023 Jan. 7 in Atlanta.

State Committee members elected seven statewide officers, and all 14 congressional district committees held elections for the position of chairperson, during the meeting, according to a news release.

“(Four) more years! Congrats to my fellow Democratic Party of Georgia Officers, excited to get back to work with you all heading into 2023!”, Todd wrote on Facebook.

Todd was first elected to the statewide position in January 2015 after chairing the Newton County Democratic Committee for a total of eight years between 2007 and 2016. 

As the title suggests, Todd oversees the actions of the various county-level Democratic Party committees.

She also serves as a District 4 member of the Newton County Democratic Committee, which is the county party’s governing body.

Her awards have included the Democratic Party of Georgia’s Chairman Award, the party’s Speaker Tom Murphy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Newton County NAACP Achievement of Excellence for Political Representation Award.

The Jefferson City, Missouri, native is a graduate of Newton County High School and Georgia Southern University. She also has worked as a substitute teacher in Newton County schools and works to advocate for autism awareness, according to information from the Democratic Party.

Congressional district committees also elected leaders for areas that include Newton County. They included Conolus Scott Jr. of Danielsville, who was elected as 10th Congressional District chairperson; and Janel Green of Decatur, who was reelected as 4th Congressional District chairperson.

U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, D-Atlanta, was reelected as Democratic Party of Georgia state chairperson; Justin Holsomback as state party secretary; and State Sen.-Elect Jason Esteves as state party treasurer.

It elected for the first time Matthew Wilson as first vice chair; Scout Smith as vice chair of Candidate Recruitment; and Vinny Olsziewski as vice chair for Constituency Groups.
