A 28-year-old Covington man died early Sunday after his car crashed into the median wall on Interstate 20 near the Salem Road exit in Rockdale County, state troopers reported.

Eric Clinton Deaton died of injuries sustained in the wreck, according to a release from Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.

Deaton was driving east in a Ford Explorer between Georgia Higway 138 and Salem Road about 6:05 a.m. when the vehicle veered onto the shoulder. Wright wrote that Deaton "over-corrected", and the Explorer crossed the traffic lanes and struck the wall and overturned.

Alcohol, speed, and failing to wear a seat belt were reportedly contributing factors in the fatal crash.

Fire and rescue personnel were called to the scene to extricate the driver. The coroner was also called to the scene.

Troopers from the Georgia State Patrol post in Monroe investigated the crash.
