The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the State Bar of Georgia recently joined with the Savannah Bar Association YLD and the Macon Bar Association YLD to assist the Savannah Area Family Emergency (SAFE) Shelter during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

YLD President-Elect Michael Geoffroy of The Geoffroy Firm, LLC, in Covington was among the participants. The service project is part of the YLD’s 2009-10 theme of supporting children and families.

YLD members raised and donated $1,000 in cash and toys and furniture for the children’s room at the SAFE Shelter, which provides protection to domestic violence victims and their children.

“This contribution was so generous, it was a whole lot more than we thought it was going to be,” said SAFE Shelter Executive Director Cheryl Branch. “The money will go toward our Client Assistance Fund, which helps clients with items like prescription medicine when they are in the shelter and with deposits or groceries when they move out. The toys are being used right now; we have about 25 kids in the shelter at this time.”
