COVINGTON, Ga. – The Newton County Solid Waste Authority has voted to table indefinitely a resolution asking the board of commissioners to approve a change to the county ordinance that prohibits out of county trash from being dumped at the landfill.

Allowing out of county trash at the landfill on a case by case basis had been suggested by Solid Waste Manager Kevin Walter as one way to raise revenue at the landfill which faces a potential budget shortfall.

That resolution tabled by the SWMA Tuesday evening would have authorized Walter to go before the board of commissioners and make the case for the ordinance change.

The prospect of the landfill accepting out of county trash had created concern in the community and on social media. Several citizens came to the meeting to make those concerns known to authority members.

District 2 Commissioner Lanier Sims made the motion to table the resolution and was seconded by BOC Chairman Marcello Banes. The motion passed 6-1.
