BOC approves SPLOST spending

The Newton County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday night to use $77,000 in 2011 SPLOST revenues to fund improvements at Dinah Pace Neighborhood Park and Victoria Station Park.

County Manager Lloyd Kerr told the board that at Dinah Pace Park, the money will go to build a pavilion, add picnic tables and a grill. The park will also get new trash receptacles and swinging benches. The park improvements will cost $34,000.

According to documents provided by the county, Victoria Station Park will receive play equipment, safety mulch and edging, two additional benches and trash receptacles. The park will also receive concrete walkways, including a 5-foot crosswalk to the playground. The cost of the improvements is $42,350.

Both projects were approved unanimously.

NEWTON COUNTY – Despite its fancy name, the Newton County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted against “Project Paradise.” The commissioners met for nearly 4.5 hours on Tuesday, where one of the main discussion points was consideration to rezone 175 acres on Old Atlanta Highway from residential to light industrial.
