NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. – The Newton County Solid Waste Authority was briefed Tuesday evening about illegal dumping near the landfill.

Authority member and Board of Commissioners Chairman Marcello Banes told members that he and District 5 Commissioner Ronnie Cowan had visited the illegal dump site on Harville Street in the Spring Hill Community.

“The thing about this is the dump site is probably less than a mile from the landfill,” Banes said. “It’s sad that it’s come to this.”

Banes told members he recovered some names from the garbage and turned those names over to the sheriff’s office.

The SWMA voted to authorize members of the county’s solid waste department to take the steps necessary to clean up the trash.
