County roads getting better; list
County offices to open at 10 a.m.

Newton County roads are clearing up, and the county offices will open at 10 a.m. Thursday.

"It appears most of our roads are in good shape," Newton County Chairman Keith Ellis said. "We're still working on some icy places, and we have a list we are working on throughout the night and into the early mornings, but all of our main arteries are clear."

Ellis shared a list of roads the county was working on getting cleared or de-iced as of 3:30 p.m.:

   Hwy 142 from Hwy 81 to Porterdale:  standing water.

   Hwy 278 East from Fire HQ to Walton County:  clear w/ some standing water.

   Hwy 162 to Hwy 212: clear w/ some standing water.

   Hwy 229:  clear to Sewell Rd, some standing water.

   Henderson Mill Rd:  clear to Gaithers Rd, then some standing water and slush.

   Hwy 213:  good until bridge, bridge some slush, good to Elks Club.

   Hwy 36:  good until cross Hwy 212, some water and slush on South.

   Crowell Rd:  good, minor standing water.

   Oak Hill Rd:  standing water and some slush.

   Bethany Rd:  multiple ice areas and slush, standing water.

   Salem Rd:  good , but several wet areas.

   Smith Store Rd:  several slush areas and very wet, ice patches in several areas.

   Rocky Plains:  hard ice and slush, very poor conditions.
