The second annual TubaChristmas celebration will be held in Porterdale on Sunday. The event, which draws tuba and euphonium players from across the state, is part of the national TubaChristmas program, which has staged concerts across the nation since the first TubaChristmas was held in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink in 1974. The event originated as a tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902, according to the TubaChristmas website, www.tubachristmas.com. The Porterdale event will take place at 3 p.m. in the plaza, also known as the alley, downtown. Signup begins at 1 p.m. at City Hall, and rehearsal will begin at 2 p.m. at the B.B. Fuzz Concert Hall in downtown Covington. The event is sponsored by the city of Porterdale, and the band will be conducted by Alan Fowler, band director at Eastside High School. Tuba or euphonium players of any skill level are welcome to participate. For more information on the event, see www.cityofporterdale.com or call (770) 786-2217.
