The Newton County Recreation Commission held its annual cheerleading competition Saturday at Alcovy High School. Four division champions were crowned. The Bulldogs took the Training League title, edging out a spirited effort from the Tide while the Seminoles captured the Division 1 championship in the second event of the day. In Division 2 it was the group representing the LSU Tigers that took home the first-place trophy, staving off a fierce challenge from the Gators. In the final meet of the day, the Gators set the tone with a stirring performance to open the Division 3 competition and looked like they would take home the hardware. But the Canes finished the day with the best performance in the division to capture the first-place honors.
