A chance to dig into a variety of tasty foods and gather for a lively feast of people is coming in the sixth annual Taste of Newton.

The annual Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce event takes place Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Porter Memorial Gym in Porterdale.

The annual celebration of area restaurants is not just a chance to eat, hear music and meet with friends but it also is a chance to support the chamber of commerce.

Lisa Baker, of the chamber, said the annual fundraiser helps bring awareness to locals about the food in their community.
Throughout recent years a lot of new restaurants have come to Covington and Newton County, and the Taste of Newton provides one accessible place to sample all the area’s dishes.

Thirty-seven businesses will be participating, including 17 restaurants. Restaurants and food preparation businesses offering their wares will be: Amici, Bradley’s BBQ, Bread and Butter, Bullirtos, College and Career Academy’s kitchen staff, Harrison Family Farm, Jessicakes, Jimmy Johns, Johnny’s Pizza, Milazzos, Mystic Grill, Oxford College, Shane’s Rib Shack, The Oaks Course, Town Square Olive Oil, Your Pie and Common Ground Coffee.

To purchase food from one of the vendors, tickets will be required each costing $1. The amount of tickets needed for food will vary from item to item. There is no admission cost to get into the event, and a cash bar will be available.

Along with the cash bar, also new this year will be music by April Allen, playing on the gym’s main stage.
