The Sixth Annual Black History Month Celebration from Newton County, Covington and the Covington Main Street program was themed Hallowed Ground and featured readings and performances from several community members.

Zari Bruce, Felicia Parks and Quintavious Reidsang, while the Mt. Zion Interpritive Praise Dancers and Shelia Cooksey and Elizabeth Howard performed, Shanna Jackson, Nicholas Jones and Haylee Williams recited poems and Cadet Lance Corp. Norwood and Cadet Lance Crop. Jones read essays.

Community members Emogene Williams and Janet Goodman reflected on Newton County’s past to make the way for its future.

The annual event, held at the Newton County Historic Courthosue, closed with the crowd singing “We Shall Overcome” and a benediction by Rev. Avis Williams.
