Candidates vie for District 10 seat

Seven Republicans vying to replace Paul Broun as the representative for Georgia’s 10 district took the stage Friday in Newton County to give their takes on some of the most pressing issues facing Congress.

The Covington News and Newton Conservative Liberty Alliance hosted a forum Friday night at Peachtree Academy’s Covington campus and asked the candidates about foreign policy, focusing on the current situation in Crimea, and healthcare reform, as well as asking several rapid-fire questions on a variety of topics from the national debt to raising to minimum wage to a requiring a balanced budget.

The full Republican slate of candidates was in attendance, included trucking business owner Mike Collins, attorney Gary Gerrard is an attorney, pastor Jody Hice, 11-year state representative and business owner Donna Sheldon, former businessman and retired Army officer Stephen Simpson, former chairman of the Columbia County Republican Party and Tea Party advocate Brian Slowinski and United States Marine Corps reserve colonel Mitchell Swan.
