B.C. Crowell passes away

Local recreation legend Billy Carl "B.C." Crowell died this morning at 5:30 a.m. after a long bought with diabetes. His funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.

Crowell coached youth sports in Newton County for years and has dedicated hours to various organizations in the county.

In 2009, Crowell was awarded the inaugural MLK Trailblazer Award for his years of service to the community. He also received a Certificate of Continuous Membership in the American Legion for his 60 years of service to that organization.

He is also the namesake of the annual B.C. Crowell Scholarship Golf Tournament held at the Oaks Golf Course, which raises funds for two $1,000 athletic scholarships given to Newton County seniors.
