Bandit fails in Dollar General theft

A gunman tried to rob a Dollar General employee Sunday morning but was thwarted when the employee managed to lock herself inside her car.

The employee left the Salem Road Dollar General to go make a bank deposit, when a black male carrying a small black handgun and wearing a black hoodie and dark pants began chasing her, said sheriff's Deputy Courtney Morrison. The man was described as being 5 foot 6 inches and 125 pounds, but he never spoke during the chase.

"It's bizarre. The perpetrator didn't make any statement. He never made a demand," Morrison said.

After the employee locked herself in the car, the man hit her car window with his handgun several times but could not break the window. The employee then drove away, while the man ran toward Salem Road.

No one was injured and nothing was taken. Anyone with information may contact the sheriff's office, which can be done anonymously at www.newtonsheriffga.org or by calling (678) 625-1400.
