Who: Bobby and Debra Hamby

The home: Victorian

Year built: Between 1898 and 1902 for John Porter, son of Oliver Porter (Porterdale's namesake)

The basics: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2,800 square feet on a 1.36 acre lot

Amenities: Formal living room, formal dining room, den, office, wide hall that runs down the middle of the house, four fireplaces (one functional), swimming pool

Favorite room: "The den is our favorite room because it is where we spend most of the time watching TV, relaxing and talking about our activities of the day," Bobby said.

Why this home: "We have always loved older homes," Bobby said. "Older homes have more character with tall ceilings and architectural detail. When we were looking for an older home to raise our family in, we looked at a lot of houses, but most needed a lot of restoration work. This house was owned by the Bibb Company and had been well-maintained, so were able to move in with little work to start with."

Major renovation projects: "Over the past 30 years we have done a few restorations," Bobby said. "The biggest and most recent is one of the bathrooms. We tore out everything and built new closets and a walk-in shower with all new fixtures. We also worked on the kitchen a few years ago."

To-do list: "The next job is to re-floor the front porch and rebuild the fence around the back yard," Bobby said. "We are trying to maintain this historic home so it will be here another 100 years. We are merely caretakers."
