What police initially believed was an attempted armed robbery at Don's Superette has turned out to be a drug deal gone bad.

Covington police officers were originally told that a patron had pumped some gas and, as he was getting ready to leave, a man brandishing a handgun got into the patron's car and told him to drive.

According to a press release from CPD Captain Ken Malcom, the driver, 19-year-old Cornelius Hudson, was actually there to sell four ounces of marijuana to 24-year-old Jemarcus Kemp. The drug sale had been set up by a third man, Dexter Jones Jr., during a three-way call between all three men.

However, instead of paying for the marijuana, Kemp pulled a firearm on Hudson and demanded the drugs. A physical altercation ensued inside Hudson's vehicle, causing him to wreck and Kemp to flee the scene.

A CPD detective located a cell phone belonging to Hudson while on the scene and put together phone and text records that led to all suspects. Following interviews, it was found that the reported armed robbery was actually a failed drug deal. During a search of Hudson's vehicle, the four ounces of marijuana was located.

Hudson and Kemp were both arrested. Hudson was charged with false statements and sale of marijuana. Kemp was charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, felony attempt or conspiracy.

Dexter Jones Jr., 26, has not yet been located, however there are warrants our for his arrest for sale of marijuana. Police ask that anyone with information on Jones, to contact the CPD at (770) 786-7605. Tips can be given anonymously.
