"Play Ball! America’s Favorite Pastimes," is the theme for five days of colorful events during Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus’ annual Daffodil Festival and Fall Symposium. The events will be held Oct. 19-23 on the newly expanded campus at 239 Cedar Lane, Covington.
Activities include panel discussions, poetry readings, campfire storytelling and a concert by internationally-renowned folksinger John McCutcheon at Jaguar Stadium. All events are free and open to the public.
The daffodil has a rich history in the region. Georgia Perimeter embraces the humble but hardy flower as a symbol of honor for the past and hope for the future with its spring and fall festivals. The annual symposium presents a series of academic, cultural and festive activities around a significant theme.
"It makes sense for us to merge these events this year with a focus on baseball and softball," said Academic Dean Alan Jackson. "GPC’s teams are based on our campus. We want to honor our Jaguars by treating these vital sports academically, recognizing their fascinating history and sharing our hopes for their enrichment of our students’ lives in the future."
On Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, folksinger John McCutcheon will perform a free concert of original songs about baseball and softball. Since 1974 the singer and multi-instrumentalist has been performing traditional folk music and his own songs reflecting on America’s heritage. His recent CD, Sermon on the Mound, reflects his lifelong passion for baseball and softball.
Daffodil Festival activities will include a poetry jam, a literary coffeehouse, daffodil bulb sales for spring planting on campus and storytelling around a campfire.
Events are sponsored by the Newton Arts and Humanities Advisory Council, the Newton Student Government Association, GPC College Foundation and the Newton Citizen newspaper.
