The rainy and windy conditions from this past weekend are still causing problems for Newton County residents.
A portion of Airport Road is closed due to floods caused by Sunday’s heavy rains. The road, which is just west of Covington Municipal Airport was expected to see a little more traffic this Friday during Newton County’s annual Relay for Life event at The Church of Covington.
Newton County Chairman Keith Ellis said he hopes to see airport road opened in the next two weeks.
The road will need to be patched, and pipes will need to be replaced.
At Tuesday’s BOC meeting, Ellis said heavy rains flooded the dry creek bed at airport road, proving too much for the existing pipes. The chairman said the pipes would be replaced for about $14,000.
The Newton County School System warned parents to expect traffic and bus delays for Flint Hill Elementary, Cousins Middle School and Newton High School students due to the road closure.
Hancock Road, also closed, is expected to take a longer with its repairs, according to Ellis.
