An Alcovy High School student has been arrested and charged with child molestation after reportedly touching and exposing himself to a 15-year-old girl at the school.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 11, but was not reported to the administration and the school resource officer until April 16, when two female students who had witnessed the incident came forward.

According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison, the two students, ages 14 and 16, had walked past on their way to get their book bags while the incident was happening and saw 17-year-old John McCammon touching a 15-year-old female and exposing himself.

The molestation allegedly occurred between 4 and 6 p.m. during an after-school program, when the teacher had turned off the lights so the students could watch a movie.

Morrison said the incident is still under investigation as to whether or not the actions were unwelcomed by the juvenile female, but she stressed that even if the female did consent, it was still very much illegal.

"She’s 15 and he’s 17 and that makes it illegal," said Morrison. "The legal age for consent to sexual contact in Georgia is 16."

McCammon is charged with child molestation. He was arrested and remains in the Newton County Jail with no bond set.

"We will not tolerate this inappropriate behavior in our schools," said Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of public relations for the Newton County School System.

"In addition to criminal charges, disciplinary action is pending."
