The man who was killed in a shooting on Nixon Circle late Friday night has been identified as 19-year-old Quintavien Vanard Johnson.

Officers from the Covington Police Department responded to multiple calls of shots being fired in the area of Nixon Circle, located in the Newton County Housing Authority Complex. When they arrived, officers found Johnson dead, lying by a Dumpster, and a second male, Dayneian A. Gibson, with a gunshot wound to the arm.

According to a press release from CPD Captain Ken Malcom, officers were immediately able to make contact with the 16-year-old male identified as the shooter.

According to reports, he was standing nearby when officers arrived, holding a gun, which he dropped, and he raised his hands in surrender.

The case is still under investigation by the CPD and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Although it is unclear at this time what might have led to the shooting, officers say there were reports of an argument between the teens.

It is unknown if the alleged shooter will be charged as a juvenile or an adult in the case.

Police said this was the first fatal shooting in the city this year.
