SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Work has resumed on a $22.5 million bridge connecting a Savannah causeway to Skidaway Island after problems stalled construction for nearly six months.

The Savannah Morning News reports  crews returned to work last week on the bridge, which arcs 80 feet over the intracoastal waterway. Construction began in 2010 on the new bridge, which will replace a 40-year-old drawbridge. The new span is scheduled to be completed in June.

Work was halted on the bridge last August after the discovery that some girders that had been installed did not meet design requirements.

The bridge was supposed to be finished Nov. 30. The contractor had been paying $1,000 a day in damages since then for failing to meet the deadline.
