HONOLULU (AP) — Tourists in popular areas of Hawaii got back to their vacations after a tropical storm swept through without widespread disaster, but a large, rural swath of the Big Island has spent more than 24 hours without electricity and is struggling with downed trees blocking roads.

The lower Puna region in the southeastern part of the island took a direct hit from Tropical Storm Iselle early Friday.

Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira says workers on Saturday are providing water, tarps and ice, which is in short supply. The island's electricity utility says the area could be without power into next week.

Meanwhile, people in more populated Oahu and Maui head to beaches and restaurants amid off and on rain. The islands are watching Hurricane Julio, which is expected to pass northeast of the state early Sunday.
