Sheriff to put idle inmates to work outside jail

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Saying he's tired of seeing prisoners sit around and drink coffee and watch TV, a newly elected Georgia sheriff plans to put them to work.

Glynn County Sheriff Neal Jump said inmate work details will pick up trash, clean the football stadium and remove mildew from the walls of county buildings.

The Florida Times-Union reports (http://bit.ly/XQdhqd) that Jump outlined the plan during a meeting this week with the county commission.

Jump said inmates who join the outside work details will be exposed to public view and will be less likely to get arrested again after their sentences are served. He said that being seen by the public will embarrass them "and they won't get into trouble again."

Jump took office Jan. 1.
