Repairs continue on hole in freeway near Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — Crews are continuing repair work on a gaping hole in some lanes of Interstate 85 near the northeast edge of Atlanta.

Workers early Tuesday morning had two southbound lanes blocked just before the start of the morning rush hour. By 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, traffic was backing up ahead of the construction zone as commuters headed into the city.

The southbound HOV lane and the lane next to it on the left were closed Tuesday while maintenance crews repair a broken drainage structure and repair a sinkhole beneath it. State transportation officials tell WSB-TV that work to make the repairs would likely last until at least mid-day on Wednesday.

Drivers are being asked to carpool or avoid the area -- near the Clairmont Road exit -- if possible.
