SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) — Police in metro Atlanta say a toddler is recovering after shooting himself with a pistol.

Sandy Springs police Capt. Steve Rose says the toddler's father was fixing a toy and his girlfriend was on a laptop when the shot was fired. Authorities say the boy suffered a wound to one of his hands and was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. Rose says the gun was tucked under a bed but was not secured.

Police cited 28-year-old Shaunell Robinson for reckless conduct for failing to secure the weapon. Robinson tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/16ueASz) she can't talk about the incident until she speaks with an attorney.

Sandy Springs is just north of Atlanta.
