MONROE, Ga. (AP) — A man who was shot five times during a burglary in Walton County has been sentenced to 20 years and is ordered to serve 10 of them in prison.

Paul Slater appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to burglary. Authorities say Slater broke into a house in Loganville in January and was shot five times by a woman inside the home who was protecting her two children.

WSB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/14CjUoJ ) Slater told the court he thought the home was empty when he forced entry and denied notions that he pursued the woman and her children through the house.

Slater's attorney, Neal Ainsworth, says his client committed the crime to support his six children and has acknowledged that stealing to support his family is inappropriate.
