Preventing skin cancer

Gooden says the practice sees 20 year olds with melanoma. With the popularity of tanning, it is important to take measures to protect your skin from cancer by wearing sunblock. When applying, remember:

—Use between 30-35 SPF. Gooden says more SPF does not mean better protection. 30-35 SPF is substantial for preventing cancer and aging.
—Gooden says reapplication is the most important thing to remember. Reapply every 3-3.5 hours.
—Use a sunscreen with zinc oxide.
—Restrict use of tanning beds.

Ten years ago Kim Gooden remembers a time when there was no full-service dermatology practice in Covington.

But for the last decade, Dermatology Consultants in Covington has been growing with the Newton County community in bigger and better ways. The practice now has three physicians and a full-time aesthetician to introduce patients to the new dermatology technology they utilize.

“We are always on the cutting edge when it comes to the medical and surgical side of dermatology,” Gooden said. “We offer micrographic surgery unlike others, which is used for skin cancer with the highest recovery rate.”

Skin cancer is one of the common conditions Dermatology Consultants offer treatment for. They also offer dermatology and aesthetic services for the treatment of acne, rosacea, psoriasis and other conditions.

“Our main goal is to help patients get healthy skin,” Gooden continued. This means the physicians provide treatment for patients of all ages with varying conditions.

Gooden said they start with preventative measures. This begins with sunblock. After that, Dermatology Consultants uses cutting-edge technology to look for ways to turn back time without cutting, like exfoliation and a skincare regimen. The reveal machine takes photos of the patient’s sun spots, spider veins and pore size so physicians can provide personalized care for each patient.

These measures, Gooden said, set the practice apart from spas. Dermatology Consultants has a staff of certified specialists in dermatology and cosmetology and recently added dermatologist Dione Marcus, MD to its roster of professionals.

Gooden has been with the company since 1991 and has seen it grow to three practices serving the Atlanta area – Covington, Buckhead and Marietta.

For the 10-year anniversary, the Covington location offers 10 percent off aesthetic products and services.

Ultherapy, one of the newest aesthetic services the practice offers, tightens and lifts the face, neck and décolleté using ultrasound technology to treat the skin’s deep support structures.
