Filmmaker Till Schauder presented his 2017 documentary “When God Sleeps” at Oxford College Sept. 20. The screening is part of the 2017-18 Southern Circuit of independent films, a tour that connects audiences with independent filmmakers in more personal ways than usual.
Set against the backdrop of the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, “When God Sleeps” tells the story of musician and activist Shahin Najafi. With a death warrant issued for his life because of his music, Shahin must constantly make life-and-death decisions that affect both him and others. Employing intimate camera work and dialogue, the film is gripping from start to finish.
Besides “When God Sleeps,” Till Schauder has written and directed award-winning films such as “Strong Shit and City Bomber,” “Santa Smokes” and “The Iran Job.” On top of promoting his film and participating in screening events, Schauder currently teaches at New York University and Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Schauder stayed after the screening to conduct a question and answer session with the audience as part of the event. “When God Sleeps” is set to be shown in South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama after its stop in Oxford through the Southern Circuit, as well as the Calgary International Film Festival afterwards.
