The Oaks Course began featuring a junior golf camp on Monday that will last throughout the summer for ages six to 13.

These four-day clinics are designed to not only teach youngsters the proper way to play the game, but also to inform them of the basic fundamentals of golf.

Led by PGA golf professional Andy Bowman, along with assistants Caleb Parmenter and Dave Nelson, the camp is a perfect opportunity to introduce and/or instruct young golfers to the game.

"It's just a good environment where we teach them the basics and fundamentals of the game - chipping, pitching, putting and the etiquette of the game," said Parmenter, "and we have some kids (who) are talented, especially at such a young age."

Although the June sessions are full, golfers still have the opportunity to register for the third session (July 16-19) by visiting the Newton County Recreation Department at the Turner Lake Complex.

"It helps get kids' interest levels up for the game," said Parmenter. "Everybody plays baseball or football, but it's good to get kids (involved) when they're young because it's a good time to learn. They can grasp things quicker while they're younger and don't have any bad habits."
