Deputies arrested a person suspected of fatally shooting one and injuring two others at a Kirkland Road home Tuesday afternoon.
According to Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Mark Mitchell, deputies received a call about 2:45 p.m. of a person shot at 86 Kirkland Road. On the way to the scene, they also learned the suspected shooter had gone across the street to a cluster of businesses.
"When officers arrived, they found three victims shot, one victim dead and the other two were hospitalized," Mitchell said, adding that life-flight services were called for at least for one of the injured.
Deputies were able to find and arrest the suspect without incident at the building across the street, which houses multiple businesses, including the New Rock Day Center.
Investigators are withholding the name of the victims until the next-of-kin can be notified Mitchell said. None of the victims or suspect is believed to be a minor.
Traffic slowed on the narrow road as onlookers strained to catch a glimpse of the white shuttered, one-story home where five NCSO vehicles, the deputy coroner and an animal control vehicle had gathered and where law enforcement were waiting on a search warrant for the home. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations was on site assisting in the investigation as well, according to Mitchell.
This is the seventh homicide handled by the NCSO for 2008 and the eighth within the county's borders, including a March murder in the city of Covington. Investigators have been able to make arrests in all cases except for a double homicide that occurred in January.
