Newton High tennis sweeps Lithonia

The Newton High boys and girls varsity tennis teams swept Lithonia on Thursday at home.

For the girls, Newton won convincingly, 5-0. With the match it gives the Lady Rams their third straight victory of the season.

In singles action, Newton winners were Kierstie Moon, Erinn Lewis-Fauel and Holly Springer.

Winning in doubles play for the Lady Rams were Stephanie Cronan/Courtney Reagan and Rhiannon Long/Ashley Tindall.

Newton will next host Salem at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

BASEBALL

The Loganville Christian Academy varsity baseball team improved its overall record to 2-0 with a 17-3 win over Monsignor Donovan Catholic School (Athens) on Thursday.  

Senior left-handed pitcher Kurt Law (3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 0 K, 4 BB, 2 ER) was credited with the win.

Freshman Spencer Earle (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 0 ER) finished the game with two no-hit innings in his first varsity appearance.  

The Lions recorded 16 hits in the contest, with freshman Drew Sewell singling to left field in his first varsity at-bat.

"I challenged our hitters to be more aggressive at the plate and they really responded," said Lions head coach Russell Hendricks. "This gave us an opportunity to play some of our younger players for a couple of innings and get a glimpse of what the future holds for the LCA baseball program."
The leading hitters for the Lions were Zaine Thistle (2-for-3, double), Nick Mauney (3-for-3), Tee Weldon (2-for-3, two RBIs), Matt Kirkland (2-for-3, double) and Nathan Owens (2-for-3, three RBIs).

 Steven Sheppard and Shea Glassman both doubled for Monsignor Donovan.

GOLF

On Thursday the Eastside High boys golf team defeated Morgan County, 162-211 while also suffering its first loss of the year against defending state champion Athens Academy, 148-162 at Long Shadow Golf Course.

Leading the way for the Eagles (3-1 overall) were Taylor Smith and Ace Cook with a score of 38. Other scorers were J.T. Blaker (42) and Nick Green (44).

"The kids played very well on a course they had never seen before and I am very proud of them," said Eastside head coach Jay Cawthon.

Eastside's next match is against Salem on Monday at Highlands Golf Club.
