The Dixie League Pee Wee Division (eight and under) district tournament was held Thursday at City Pond, and ended with Newton County's American All-Star team being crowned tournament champions once again.
The American All-Stars - led by head coach Brian Digby, Greg Evans and Brian Gates - shutout Jones County, 13-0 and captured the title, making it the eighth consecutive time it has won the district tournament.
Newton County's American All-Stars dominated during the tournament, winning all five games played and scoring 56 runs in the process. Overall, the team batted .516, including a collective four home runs by Ryan Digby, Brayden Ergle, Stevie Howard and William Rutledge.
The defensive fielding was just as solid, which also contributed to the success of the team, allowing just six runs (.83 runs per game).
Strong pitching consisting of a five-man rotation - Brennan Carter, Digby, Michael Hipps, Howard and Rutledge - combined for a 1.83 ERA, and held opponents to a .138 batting average.
Ricky Vaughn, Newton County Recreation Department's athletic supervisor, was very pleased with the outcome of the tournament.
Vaughn said that "he was glad to see a Newton County team win, but he was happy with both the fan turnout and the positive support throughout the tournament."
Vaughn wished the other two Newton County teams could have been more successful, but they were comprised of younger players (mainly seven-year-olds).
The top two teams (Newton County American All-Stars and Jones County) will travel to Collins Hill on Saturday to compete for the state title, and will face the other 14 top two finishers in each district.
