Ms. Melba C. Polk, 88, of Covington died Aug. 16 at Park Place Nursing Home in Monroe. Daughter of the late Raymond L. and Vallie Standard Chambers, she was born in Butts County. Mrs. Polk was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She worked for more than 20 years at the Covington Wal-Mart as a greeter. She loved cooking for her family at gatherings. She loved growing tomatoes and giving them away to her family and friends, and she loved watching the Home Shopping Network. She could always find a deal. She also loved Elvis and his music and died on the same date Elvis died. Mrs. Polk was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church and was a member of the Otis Nixon Sunday school class.
She is survived by her daughters Pat Daniel and Vickie Denny and sister-in-law Lorene Robbins, all of Covington; grandchildren, Stephanie and Adam Lowe of Snellville, Wayne and Nita Denny, Denise Daniel, Angie and Robbie Coggins and Rob and Crystal Daniel, all of Covington; great-grandchildren, Ashley Scott, Alex Lowe, Nicholas Lowe, Trevor Scott and Ava Denny.
Funeral services for Mrs. Polk will be held Monday, Aug. 18 at Salem United Methodist Church with Carol Standard officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 17 at the funeral home. Wheeler Funeral Home & Crematory are in charge of the arrangements.
