Mary Sammons

Mary Sammons, 89, of Covington, died March 5 at Newton Medical Center. The daughter of the late James Walter and Mary (Boswell) Sammons, she was born in Newton County. Miss Sammons was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church where over many years she taught The Joy Class Sunday school, served as church secretary was a member and officer of WMU and was very supportive of other churches and ministries. Miss Sammons was a long-time employee of Covington Mill, worked for Schwobilt Men's Clothing, Macy's in downtown Atlanta and was a volunteer for 35 years with Newton Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and reading. Miss Sammons is preceded in death by siblings Flora Smith, Robert Sammons, Neal Sammons, Frank Sammons and Allen Sammons.

Surviving are sister-in-law Retha Sammons of Indian Head, Md.; nieces and nephews Dennis Smith, Mary Ella Bruce, Mike Smith, Karlean Hester, Jean Brizzi, Bobby Sammons, Drake Sammons, Sharon Callahan, Ronald Sammons, Carol Dimsdale, Nicky Sammons, Darlene Langley, Danny Sammons, Michael Sammons, Patty Sammons, Amy Anderson; several great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Calvary Baptist Church. Viewing will be from 1:30 p.m. until the service. The Rev. Alan Thompson and the Rev. Roy Kiser will officiate, and interment will follow in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Access Road location of Caldwell & Cowan today, March 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Flowers are accepted or donations may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church, 4228 Mill St., Covington, 30014.
