Kathryn Pennington

Kathryn Pennington, a longtime resident of DeKalb County, passed away July 22, two weeks before her 96th birthday. She was born Kathryn Elizabeth Johnson to Bonham Lemuel Johnson and Carrie Mitcham Johnson in Covington in 1912.

Mrs. Pennington graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1934 and began teaching in Newton County, a career that would end with her retirement from Medlock School in DeKalb County in 1972. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honorary society for educators. Mrs. Pennington married Ralph Wiggins Pennington, a prominent horticulturist in 1935.

Surviving are daughters Anne and her husband Richard Perry, Nancy and husband Almand Bullard; grandchildren Michael A. Bullard, William A. Bullard, Elizabeth Bullard Fischer, Michael J. Perry; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, July 25, at noon in the chapel of Harwell-Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Troutman officiating. Visitation for family and friends will precede the service, beginning at 10 a.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be at Covington City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard Blvd. SW, Atlanta, GA 30315.
