Impact looking for players, sponsors

Just because the highly coveted Dixie World Series is going on doesn't mean there aren't any other special teams in Newton County.

Enter: Newton Impact, a 12 and under fastpitch travel softball team out of Covington.

What began as a recreation all-star team when the girls were just seven years old, the Impact has grown into something much bigger.

Currently, the Impact has been together for four years, and recently wrapped up its 10U season as World Series champions. Previously, most of the players represented the county year after year as its Newton County All Stars.

And now the players are about to start their fall season in the 12 and under league. Soon the Impact will be holding tryouts for the fall season.

Over the past several years, the Impact has been ranked one of the top teams in its age bracket in Georgia.

However, due to the high cost of traveling out of state, most of its success has come at home and the surrounding metro-Atlanta area. The Impact is still searching for sponsors to help realize its goal of traveling out of state to find bigger tournaments and better competition.

As a result, this should prepare the players to make a run at Nationals in 2009.

Led by coaches Marcus Smith, Dennis Dickson and Emory Johnson, the Impact is a non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible.

The following is a list of highlights showcasing the spring 2008 10U season:
