After five years in the business, Happy J's has emerged as one of the premier places in Newton County to grab a tasty dog or a plate of onion rings.

Owner Jim Jones, a former home remodeling contractor, said it was always his dream to own a restaurant.

 On Happy J's Hot Dogs first day of business, Jones recalled bringing in only $39.

 Since that first day, though, word has spread of the little eatery, which is known for its good food, friendly service and low prices.

"Probably the biggest thing I like [about Happy J's] is people complementing the food," Jones said.

Jones said his restaurant, located at the corner of Washington Street and Flat Shoals Road, has really made a name for itself with its Happy Dog - a hot dog with mustard, onions, chili and coleslaw.

 Jones said he isn't aware of any other restaurant in the area that serves that unique combination of condiments on their hot dogs.

All hot dogs at Happy J's are made from beef.

 Customers can choose from chili dogs, slaw dogs, cheese dogs, chili cheese dogs, corn dogs and foot-longs - the most expensive dog on the menu at $3.10.

For new visitors to Happy J's, Jones recommends the onion rings, which are made on-site and are $2.25 an order.

"We have people say you got the best onion rings in the state," Jones said.

The restaurant's chicken wings, which come in mild, medium, hot, lemon pepper, honey barbecue, teriyaki and battered fried, are also very popular Jones said.

 Wing orders start at five pieces ($3.50), continue on to 10 pieces ($6.25), all the way up to 100 pieces ($47.95).

Hamburgers, including the Happy Decker ($3.75), a triple-decker burger, are offered as well.

 Chicken tender baskets, which come with fries, Texas toast and dip, are on the menu and come in three-piece ($5.45) and six-piece orders ($7.95).

 A selection of sandwiches and salads round out the menu at Happy J's.

Happy J's serves breakfast from 6 a.m. to 10: 30 a.m. Waffles, egg breakfasts, French toast, omelets and breakfast sandwiches are all on the menu with no breakfast item more than $4.
