Executive Cuts moves to Porterdale

Established in 2005, Executive Cuts Barbershop has relocated to the city of Porterdale, directly across from the Porterdale Mill Lofts.

Owner John Taylor said the decision to relocate to Porterdale was made after he found out there weren't any other barbershops in the growing town. Executive Cuts was formerly located on U.S. Highway 278 near Emory Street.

According to Taylor there hasn't been a barbershop in Porterdale in nearly 20 years. His shop now occupies the same space as its predecessor which left the small town so many years ago.

"It's a privilege to come down here and open up a business as an African-American," Taylor said adding, "There is a lot of history in this building."

Taylor thanked building owner Monty Hill for helping him to get set up in the barbershop space.

Taylor, who earned his barber's license in 1998, has been cutting hair in Newton County since 2002. He has also trimmed hair in Decatur.

Taylor said customers at Executive Cuts can expect "the best quality hair cut. I cut all types of hair, white and black. I welcome all."

Prices at Executive Cuts are as follows: Afro cuts - $15; men's cuts - $12; cut and shave - $17; kids under 10 - $10; razor shave - $5; senior citizens - $10; shampoo only - $10; appointments - $20.

"I love cutting hair," Taylor said. "This is my life. This is my dream."

While Taylor is the only barber currently at Executive Cuts, he says he would eventually like to add several more barbers.

With a large television screen mounted high on the wall and snacks and beverages for sale, Taylor says he is trying to cultivate a men's country club-like atmosphere. Taylor added that his shop is kid-friendly with no profanity allowed.
