Doris Houston Belcher

Mrs. Doris Houston Belcher died July 22 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The daughter of the late Oscar Houston and Ruby Benton Houston, she was born in 1929 in Newton County. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined James Paschal Baptist Church, Covington. For many years, Mrs. Belcher returned to the annual Homecoming Celebration in Covington. Mrs. Belcher graduated from Washington High School. She married Samuel Belcher, and they resided in Omaha, Neb., and Elizabeth, N.J., before moving to Pittsburgh in 1972. There she was employed by Linton's Clothing Store in Squirrel Hill, retiring after 30 years of service. While residing in Pittsburgh, she joined Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in the East Liberty Community. She was a member of the Adult Usher Board until her health failed. Mrs. Belcher enjoyed dancing at the Vintage Senior Center, shopping and cooking, especially for family gatherings. Family was high on her list of priorities. She will be remembered for her laughter and sarcasm. She resided at the Forbes Road Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East End, Pittsburgh. She appreciated the dedication and devotion of the staff. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Belcher and brothers Leonard and Rufus.

Surviving are loyal cousin Mary Lois Sisson of Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law Bert Benton of Georgia, Ethelene Houston of Virginia, Mildred (Eddie) Sams of Georgia; nieces Althea (Julius) Perry of Heath, Ohio, Terri (Ernest) James of Georgia, Kimberly Houston of Georgia; nephews Leonard Benton Jr. of Georgia and Anthony Houston; cousins Elsie Spain of New York, Mary Alice (Gus) Henderson of Georgia, Paul (Czerna) Benton Jr. of Pennsylvania, Willa B. Benton of New York and wife Hollis (wife), Houston; Emma Rhodes of Pennsylvania; a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held in Pittsburgh July 25. A second service was held at Young Memorial Chapel, Covington, July 29, with the Rev. Matt Murphy officiating.. Interment followed at Westside Cemetery, Covington.
