The Back 2 School Block Party is set for tomorrow evening with the event starting at 5:30 p.m. on the square in Covington.

Main Street Covington, Washington Street Community Center and more than 20 local business partners have come together to offer a summer-ending festival for parents and children who will be returning to school next week

Along with refreshments and plenty of freebies including pen holders, T-shirts and rain gauges, 500 book bags filled with school supplies will be given out to Newton County elementary students who show up and register early.

The square will be full of organizations handing out information and answering questions related to their causes or services. Giveaways and book bags aside, the event will showcase plenty of local youth talent.

According to Josephine Kelly, director of Main Street Covington, all performances will be held on the bricked area beneath the flag pole at the southeast corner of the square.

Children from The Performing Arts Center for Education will perform a 15-minute dance routine. The group will consist of 18 dancers.

Several ministry groups from Springfield Baptist Church will showcase their skills throughout the event. Each routine will run for 10 minutes and four groups are set to perform dance routines.

Conservatory of Dance (D'Lauren Dance Troup) of Decatur has joined the festivities and will take to the bricks with ballet, tap and hip-hop dancing as the theme.

Pastor Paul Casola of Passion Community Church has put the event schedule together and says there is still time to sign-up if you wish to perform. When putting together the schedule, he left gaps to accommodate any late comers.

If you would still like to participate as a performer, contact Paul Casola at (770) 783-2220 or Josephine Kelly at (770) 843-2657.
