Striders team heads to national meet

Youth members of the Southeast Striders Track and Field Club competed at the Georgia State Games Championships at Marietta High School Monday.

The Southeast Striders, who placed in the top three, qualified for the National State Games of America to be held in Hershey, Pa., through Saturday.

Southeast Striders who qualified are: Ben Kennedy, Reece Burton, Patrick Murray, Summer Holtz and Brianna Jackson.

Burton and Murray, both 12, were the Southeast Strider’s first-place finishers, in the mini javelin and high jump, respectively.

Burton also qualified for the National State Games of America by finishing second in the high jump.

Kennedy, 17 and headed to Troy University on a track scholarship in the fall, finished second in the javelin throw. Holtz, 11, finished in second in the 80-meter hurdles, and Jackson, 8, was second in the mini javelin.

Coaching the Southeast Striders, consisting of Rockdale and Newton County athletes based out of Rockdale County, are B.J. Kennedy, head coach, ,and assistants Angelynn Kennedy, Rick Crumbley, Ben Kennedy and Akilia Murray.
