COVINGTON, Ga. — Eastside's state playoff bound Lady Eagles traveled across town to meet the Alcovy Lady Tigers Tuesday night on Alcovy’s senior night for the first meeting since 2014.
And despite some midseason frustrations, including a 1-7 mark in the month of March after a 4-0 start, it was Alcovy emerging with a dominate 5-0 result, notching its third win in the last four matches.
The Lady Eagles came in with a 6-2-1 all-time advantage over the Lady Tigers since the two teams first met on the pitch in 2007.
Eastside (9-6-1, 5-1 4-AAAA) was also 7-2 in their last 9 games while Alcovy (8-8, 3-7 3-AAAAAA) was 2-7 in their last 9 matches leading up to their confrontation.
But none of that mattered as the offensive combination of Sydney Ziglar (two goals & two assists) and Kaliya Eutsey (three goals & one assist) proved too much for the visiting Lady Eagles to handle.
Ziglar scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Eutsey just over 5 minutes into the match.
Ziglar returned the favor when she launched a corner kick that Eutsey headed into the Eastside goal 17:35 before the halftime break.
Ziglar made it 3-0 when she converted a penalty kick with 13:46 remaining in the 1st half.
In the second half, Eutsey scored twice to secure a hat-trick. Her first goal came with 29:14 on the clock when she dribbled through five Lady Eagles down the left side of the pitch and sent a shot past the Lady Eagle keeper into the far side of the Eastside net to make it 4-0.
Then with 15:08 left in the game Eutsey scored on a left-footed strike after controlling a chip pass from Ziglar to provide the final margin.
Eastside never got their normally high-powered offense going Tuesday night. And even when Eastside did get shots off, Lady Tiger keeper Daphne Ramirez — who signed a letter of intent to Brenau just hours before the match — made the stops to record the shutout.
The Lady Eagles finish the regular season at Fayette County in Fayetteville, while the Lady Tigers host Newnan Friday in their season finale.
Eastside boys cruise to easy win
The Eastside boys (9-5-3) scored its third straight win and fourth out of the last five games with a 5-0 victory over cross-county rival Alcovy (2-18) Tuesday night.
After a bit of a stalemate in the early going, Eastside cracked the scoreboard when Zack Glover fired a shot into the left corner of the goal, off a through pass from freshman Jordan Beam, making it 1-0 at the 23:00 mark.
Christian Goerner made it 2-0 just before the half after winning a one-on-one battle with the Alcovy keeper. Goerner had a hand in two more of the last three Eastside goals as well, recording an assist to Bryson Wade who scored and then getting a through pass to Wesley Hudgins for the game’s final score.
Hudgins also scored another goal before that one, giving him two on the night.
Eastside will get one last postseason tune-up Thursday when it travels to Fayette County.
