COVINGTON, Ga. — It has been a busy week for all local basketball teams competing in their respective region tournaments. Of the eight teams to begin the week in the winner’s bracket, only three remain: The Newton Rams, the Social Circle Redskins and Lady Redskins.

For the Rams, their 8-0 regular season record in Region 4-AAAAAAA earned them a first round bye automatically advancing them. Also, the Rams had already secured a state playoff berth before playing the first quarter of the tournament.

In the second round, they faced South Gwinnett, who they defeated twice during the regular season, on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Just like the two previous matchups, Newton came out on top of the Comets again 65-37.

That gave the Rams a date with Grayson in the region title game on Friday, Feb. 18, at Newton High School.

As far as both Social Circle programs go, they both earned state playoff appearances. The Redskins had their spot secured prior to the tournament tipping off, but the Lady Redskins won their place on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

With all Region 8A-Public tournament action being hosted at Commerce High School, the Lady Redskins faced Washington-Wilkes in the first round.

Social Circle downed the Lady Tigers 35-28 to officially stamp its place into the 2022 state playoffs. At the time of this publication, the Lady Redskins were set to face Commerce on Thursday, Feb. 17. If it wins, Social Circle will play in the finals on Friday, Feb. 18.

Concerning the Redskins squad, they, like Newton, earned a round one bye thanks to their 12-0 record in Region 8A-Public.

They, like the Lady Redskins, will face-off against Commerce in the semi-final round on Feb. 17 with the region championship game held on Feb. 18, should Social Circle advance.

The girls team for Newton also remains in the thick of things for state playoff seeding.

On the first day of the region tournament, the Lady Rams defeated South Gwinnett 55-47. All they needed was that victory to stamp their ticket into the state playoffs.

But Feb. 12’s win did more than that.

Newton advanced to the second round of the region tournament, too, to face No. 1 seed, Grayson. The Lady Rams came out on the losing end of that matchup 65-42.

Even so, the Lady Rams battled Parkview on Friday, Feb. 18 at Newton High School. The winner will earn the No. 3 seed for the state playoffs.
