The Newton County 14-and-under All Stars won its first game in the Dixie Boys World Series Saturday.

The Newton team, representing Georgia, defeated Alabama 4-3 in extra innings in the double elimination tournament held at Citizens Park in Aiken, South Carolina. According to Newton County Chairman Keith Ellis, who was in South Carolina to watch the home team play, Newton scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning, and standout defensive play sealed the victory.

Alabama then put a runner on first with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Newton’s catcher was able to throw behind the runner to pick him off for the final out of the game.

Newton County was slated to meet the winner of North Carolina and Louisiana later Saturday.

Saturday’s win guaranteed Newton a game today.

Newton earned a chance to represent Georgia in the Dixie Boys World Series thanks to a dramatic come-from behind victory over Columbia in the state championship.
