The legacy of former Eastside student and soccer player Chasen (Chase) Cain will live forever with those who knew him best. Saturday morning, the Covington Family YMCA Outdoor Center will make sure he will never be forgotten.

Cain, who lost his life in October 2004 in a single-vehicle accident, will be honored at the center located on Ga. Highway 142 at Stone Road in Oxford. The center will dedicate the Chase Cain Memorial Soccer Field at 8:30 a.m. followed by a ceremonial goal kick at 8:45 a.m. and games beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Cain played on the Eagles’ soccer team before graduating in 2004. He was also involved in YMCA’s soccer program and worked at the Covington YMCA, where his father Eddie is currently a volunteer.

Eastside assistant principal and athletic director Dennis Rodenberry remembers Cain as an avid soccer player, but more so, he remembers a happy-go-lucky student who drew people together with his personality.

"Chase was not only a good student, but he has an outstanding soccer player in his own right," Roddenberry said. "He was a fun-loving young man that had an infectious smile that could warm up even the coldest individual."

Cain made an impact in the community before his tragic death as he worked as an afterschool counselor and remained involved with the YMCA even as a student at Georgia Perimeter College.

The field will permanently bear his name as a reminder of the impact Cain made on children in the community and those at Eastside will never forget as they keep his picture near the trophy case in the main commons.

"Chase demonstrated a competitive spirit and will be always remembered as an Eastside Eagle," Roddenberry said. "The entire Cain family has been instrumental parts of the Eastside athletics."
