The following is an update on former Newton County basketball players at the collegiate level. Updates run through Dec. 17.
Jamon Hawkins, Newton- Georgia Southwestern senior Jamon Hawkins and the Hurricanes have started the 2013-2014 season off strong, sporting a 10-0 record this season.
The Hurricanes have earned the No. 21 ranking in Division II, with Hawkins second on the team in scoring at 13 points a game.
Hawkins has started nine of 10 games for Georgia Southwestern this season, shooting 47 percent from the field, while grabbing just over two rebounds a game and dishing out a team-high three assists.
In the Hurricanes’ last contest against Clayton State, Georgia Southwestern defeated the Lakers 62-56, with
Hawkins scoring nine points while pacing the Hurricanes with eight assists.
Hawkins and the Hurricanes return to action Dec. 19 at home against Fort Valley State.
Stephen Croone, Newton- After starting the season on a 3-0 win streak, Croone and the Furman Paladins have dropped three of their last four games, falling most recently to Mars Hill on Dec. 10 and to Clemson on Dec. 14.
Against the Clemson Tigers, the Paladins fell 71-35, with Croone scoring nine points in the loss. The sophomore also grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists against the ACC opponent.
Through 10 games this season, Croone leads the Paladins in scoring at 19.3 points a game, almost seven points more than any other player on the Paladains roster.
Croone has also dished out a team-high 33 assists, while leading Furman at the free-throw line at 84 percent for the season.
Croone also paces the Paladins with 22 steals, almost half of the team's total of 57 steals.
Croone and Furman looked to improve on their 4-6 record on Dec. 20 at home against Liberty. The game can be seen nationally on ESPN3.
Derrick Henry, Newton- Henry has still yet to play for the Winthrop Eagles while recovering from knee surgery after tearing his ACL last February.
In his abscence, the Eagles have started the season well at 6-2 overall with a 5-0 mark at home.
The Eagles have gone 4-1 over their last five games, with their lone loss coming to Virginia Tech.
The Eagles recently defeated Appalachian State on Dec. 15, besting the Mountaineers 80-72 at home.
Winthrop returns to action today on the road in Durham, N.C., against North Carolina Central.
Meagan Tucker, Alcovy- Through 10 games this season, Tucker has appeared in four contests for the Auburn Tigers, helping Auburn to a 7-3 record.
Tucker has averaged 21.3 minutes while in action, averaging 4.3 points a game while grabbing three rebounds. The freshman has also dished out 10 assists through four contests.
The Tigers have won their last three contests against Tulane, St. Johns and Florida A&M.
Tucker and the tigers return to action today at home against Presbyterian.
Ashley Williams, Alcovy- Williams has played in all 10 games for the Alabama Crimson Tide this season with three starts.
Williams has averaged just under nine points a game, at 8.9 points per contest, while shooting 47 percent from the floor.
The freshman has also grabbed five rebounds a contest while blocking two shots.
Alabama has won its last two contests, including a 75-62 victory over Jacksonville Tuesday morning.
Williams and the Tide return to action on Dec. 20 at home against Troy.
