The fun, the laughter and the dazzling basketball skills of the Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Newton County.
The Globetrotters will also be bringing fundraising prowess, helping to raise money for the Alcovy girls' basketball program.
Alcovy will be hosting a Harlem Globetrotters and NBA Legends celebrity basketball game on Sept. 8. The event will pit former Globetrotters and NBA players against people from the Newton County/Covington community beginning at 4 p.m. at Alcovy High School.
Tickets are $10 with proceeds going to the Lady Tigers' basketball program.
Alcovy girls' coach Kidada Holtzclaw first thought of the idea to help raise money for her program when talking to a family friend who knew former Globetrotter, Harold "Bobo" Hubbard.
The two discussed how the Globetrotters Legends program helps raise funds for various organizations.
"I thought it would be a great idea for our program as well as bring something fun and exciting to Newton and Covington," Holtzclaw said.
The game will feature many of the traditional Globetrotters' antics such as pulling students out of the crowd to teach them how to spin the ball, trick passes and other comedic elements that have made the Globetrotters a hit for generations. The former Harlem stars will be competing against a team compiled by Holtzclaw, thus far featuring representatives of businesses such as Gin Chevrolet, Penn Trucking and Wendy's.

Tickets will be available at various Newton County businesses and also daily at the Alcovy front office.
