COVINGTON, Ga. — The Eastside Eagles golf team got off to a fast start during the first round of Newton Cup action Wednesday afternoon at The Oaks, as the Eagles hold a 67 shot lead over Newton and a 20 shot lead over Alcovy.
Eastside was paced by junior Griffin Autry who shot one under 35. But Nick Mitchell also helped by shooting a 44, and Will Harwell and Riley McSwain each shot a 47. As a team, Eastside shot a 173 in first round action.
The Lady Eagles were similarly impressive, shooting a team-total 138 in first round action on the girls’ side. Caroline Culbertson shot a career low 40 and Emma Camfield fired a 47.
Culbertson had some company, though, as her score placed her second just behind Newton sophomore Ally Black. Black shot a 38 which Rams coach Rick Rasmussen called "one of her best nines ever in competition."
"She seems to love the (Newton) Cup," he added. "(Culbertson) from Eastside shot 40, and I think that pushed her to play her best. She actually had one four putt, so it could've been even lower. She made two birdies though, and was outstanding."
Although the Eastside girls (along with the boys) retained their Newton Cup title last year, Black won low medalist individually.
Round two will commence onMonday April 15 at Ashton Hills.
